Mere looking at the dense forest, you may wonder how you are going to hike through it in search for the gorillas. This is simple due to the fact that it’s the duty of the rangers to identify where the gorillas were the previous day without the hassle of walking through the entire forest. Since they are the people that habituate them, they clearly know how to locate them and they often use signs such as crushed bamboo, celery, stalks, dung, footprints and deserted nests from the previous evening. Surprisingly gorillas have a habit of soiling their nests and after abandon them and create new ones every night. Rangers can easily detect how long the nest has been built as well as which group. As you get closer to the gorillas, you are advised to bend so that the dominant male can see you at all times. This helps the family not to feel threatened. Avoid looking into the eyes of the gorillas, they may take it as being violent to them. You must maintain a calm look and try to look sideways. Just in case you fail to make it, you are advised to stay with the porter as the rest continue, after tracking you join them and head to the headquarters
Gorilla Trekking Groups
Currently there are 10 gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda. Each group is visited by 8 people per day. The groups keep on increasing and decreasing because some are born and other die. Some female juveniles may decide to shift to other groups and others prefer leaving alone. Below are the family names.
*Agasha gorilla group is made up of 25 members and its located in Sabyinyo Volcano, the name simply means news
*Amahoro group consists of 17 individual members and it’s situated in Bisoke Volcano, the group is led by a dominant silverback known as Ubumwe.The name beautifully means serene
*Bwenge comprises of 10 members and it’s positioned between Bisoke as well as Sabinyo Volcanoes. The name amazing means brightness.
*Hirwa has 12 members and its situated between Sabyinyo and Gahinga Volcanoes. This is a new group that originated from Sabyinyo and Agasha.The name wonderfully means lucky one.
*Kwitonda consists of 18 members and it’s located within Sabyinyo and Gahinga Volcanoes. The name means meek and humble.
*Ntambara has 12 members and it’s found between Bisoke as well as Sabyinyo Volcanoes. The name means warfare.
*Sabyinyo comprises of 12 individuals and it’s discovered in Sabyinyo Volcano. This group is the easiest to track since is nearer to the park. The name simply means Old man’s teeth
*Susa is made up of two sub groups, it consists of 43 members, it’s found in Karisimbi volcano and its one of the most difficulty group to track. It’s the largest group given that it’s subdivided into two families.
*Ugyenda has 11 members and it’s positioned between Bisoke and Sabyinyo Volcanoes. The name means exit
